It all started with a t-shirt.

I've always had a thing for this vintage Boeing logo.
So much so that I decided it would make a great Father's Day
gift for a certain Boeing engineer that I happen to be married to.

Step 1: photocopy the image, then take a picture of the image.
If you have a more dependable scanner than I do, that would work too.

Step 2: Download dark picture into Picnik and using 'Effects', invert colors.
Scan or snap a picture of the new image.
Step 3: Print picture to desired size.  I wanted a fairly good sized pic, so I went into 'properties' on my printer menu and chose 3x3 poster (9 sheets of paper).
Cut out image and tape it together.

Step 4: Transfer image to painted board (I primed with Killz and
then gave it a coat of Antique White acrylic craft paint).
To transfer, I found the darkest page of the newspaper and used it as 'carbon paper'.
It worked quite well and cost me nothing. Yay me.

Step 5: As I was transferring the image I noticed that none of the lines were wider than 1/2 an inch.  My painting skills being what they are...(limited, very limited)...I decided to use my 50% off Michael's coupon and buy myself a paint pen (this was the set) to do the job.  Yes, I'm brilliant.

Step 6: Using Dark Chocolate (yes, paint, not the stuff you eat), I brushed a very irregular line around the outside edge.

Step 7: I thinned down some Bittersweet Chocolate (again, paint!) and wiped it on with a damp rag.
I went over the whole thing two or three times to get to this point.
Any questions?

  1. It turned out so much better than I even hoped. Nice job. I'll have to use that printing trick sometime.

  2. Okay, I want one for my airplane bathroom. This looks a little involved for my current crafting sensibilities, however.
